I noticed that sometimes I get this message when the hosted channel goes offline:
> :tmi.twitch.tv HOSTTARGET #hosting_channel :- 500000
Instead of showing the actual number of viewers, sometimes it shows 500k. Why is that?
I’ve been told that if it has reported “500000” that it’s part of their system with switching channels. Ignore counts of “500000” as Twitch won’t display them anyways.
The number (regardless if 500,000 or not) in HOSTTARGET is used by our clients to jitter so that we don’t have a thundering herd problem for video loading.
The 500,000 is an artifact of sometimes us not being able to determine the correct number within a reasonable time span, so we overcompensate.
